Sight Unseen
Exhibition of photographs by
Ilze Arajs, Larry Chait, and Jean Sousa
curated by Alan Leder
The photographs in "Sight Unseen" closely examine the ephemeral beauty of natural forms while revealing rich metaphors to our own life cycles of birth, growth, and decay. In these series of photos, Arajs, Chait, and Sousa investigate and visually transform the commonplace in the environment: weathered leaves, multi-hued bark, flower petals, newly sprouted ferns unfurling. Sensuous, anthropomorphic shapes emerge, spectral figural forms meld with petals and grasses. In a decaying leaf, elements of abstraction are revealed that evoke intimate yet vast surfaces to explore.
